Panagia Soumela

The church of Panagia Soumela in Greece is a modern monastery on Mount Vermion, founded in 1951 by Pontic Greeks. It is a spiritual successor to the original historic monastery of the same name in Pontus (modern-day Turkey), which was abandoned in 1923 following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey. The new monastery, located near Kastania in the Imathia region, holds the sacred icon of Panagia Soumela, which was transferred to Greece in 1931
